President's Message | November Newsletter

As I reflect back on the past year I am pleased with the accomplishments of our Chapter and impressed when I consider the circumstances under which they were achieved.  During a time of reduced resources and organizational restructuring, the Government Affairs team of Bill Blankenship and Tommy Thompson collaborated with the jurisdictions within Riverside County to achieve yet another year of needed relief for our industry:

  • WRCOG’s extension of the temporary 50% TUMF reduction through 2012 with a phase out of the reduction through March 2013 while eliminating the $20 Million cap
  • Extension of DIF fee reductions in the cities of Beaumont, Corona, Perris and unincorporated Riverside County
  • Postponement of a DIF fee increase in the City of La Quinta
  • Permanent development fee reduction in the City of Moreno Valley
  • Collaborated with the City of Eastvale in their adoption of a new DIF fee, at nearly half the amount of the previous DIF fee
  • School fee reductions in the school districts of Banning, San Jacinto, Imperial, Romoland, Perris and Jurupa (partial list)
  • The tabling for 5 years of a proposed Inclusionary Housing Ordinance in the City of Calimesa which has the potential to add additional burdens on development

These accomplishments were all achieved in a year where our chapter sharpened our pencils to do the hard work of reducing our operating expenses.  The results of which produced a reduction of operating expenses for 2012 of approximately 54% while generating a positive net cash flow for 12 months of operations.  The magnitude of these costs savings is certainly great, however, what is particularly impressive is the fact that these savings did not come at the expense of member services.  Our hard working chapter staff worked smart to produce value added events for our members, creating those crucial opportunities for networking and connecting with our peers to once again grow our businesses.

When we focus we succeed and succeed we have.  I am grateful and appreciative for the dedication and focus of our chapter board members and dedicated staff (Bill, Tommy, Brenda, Jennifer and Michelle).

On to the future and the hope and optimism that precede it.  I have had the pleasure of working with Mr. Dan Boyd of D.R. Horton, our incoming Chapter President, for the past 2 years and in that time I have gained a respect and admiration for him.  Dan brings tenacity and a passion to his endeavors.  He speaks his mind and proactively seeks opportunities to improve our organization.  He has a clear vision of the future and how to get us there.  I have no doubt that Dan’s exuberance and passion for our industry will serve us well as he leads our great organization into the future.  Congratulations Dan and I look forward to your next year of service.
