Our Annual Membership Appreciation Night held at Lake Elsinore Diamond Stadium brought out over 150 members. It was a perfect spring evening for one of America’s favorite past time… Baseball! BIA members enjoyed a fun night of networking, beginning with some beers and bites at the Hangar 24 Flight Deck.  President, Jay Pierce watched as his son, Nicholas threw out the first pitch of the game. Behind home plate BIA watched as the Storm battled it out with Lancaster’s JetHawks.

BIA would like to thank our EVENT sponsors:  Fusion Sign and Design, Applied Photography, Masonry Innovations, Richmond American Homes and Energy Efficiency Education Partner-Southern California Edison.  We extend gratitude to one of BIA’s newest member, Lake Elsinore Diamond Stadium for welcoming our members to the ballpark.  It is with the generosity and support of member companies like these that allows BIA to service our members with great success.

Huge congratulations to another new member to our association,  Kimbery Vicknair from QDI Stone for winning the JVC HD LED TV!

Membership Spotlight | April 2014

The Riverside Chapter is proud to spotlight our Membership Services Committee (MSC) for the awesome work they do for the Association, the Chapter and for the Members.  This dedicated group of 16 volunteers remain passionate about recruiting new members to BIA, as well as retaining existing members through reach out and Ambassador calls.  Many of the MSC members have been involved for a number of years and have maintained an impressive amount of enthusiasm through good times, as well as the recent tougher times.  In 2013, the Riverside Chapter recruited 58 new members, which contributed to a 17% increase association-wide, now totaling 1,033 members.  Nineteen (19) of these new members were recruited by the MSC during the Fall membership drive.  In addition, 2013 saw a retention rate of 86% in the Riverside Chapter.  This is in large part due to the MSC’s great effort.  With 2014 already looking to be more successful than 2013 we are excited about the committee’s energy and enthusiasm.  Join us in applauding this group of hardworking volunteers!

President's Message | December 2013

As I depart, I can say without hesitation that my tenure as Riverside’s BIA Chapter 2013 President marks the highlight of my 35 years in this business.  Every emotion that I have has been filled with my love for this industry. Having worked hand in hand with our Board and BIA Team led by Bill Blankenship has simply been a whirlwind of experiences, filled with opportunities, challenges and tremendous accomplishments giving me a whole new level of respect for BIA and all of the folks that make our organization so great!

As many of you know I am a person that takes pride in leadership.  Leading by example is just the materialization of your commitment, more importantly you need to draw from the depths of your passion. I believe if people believe in your vision they will follow your leadership. It is this vision that I hope is my legacy and I truly recognize that the accomplishments are not mine alone, but shared by those who believed in my leadership, supported me when I was challenged and guided as well as encouraged me when I was entering a dark path.  Your devotion has been marked by your endless hours of service given to BIA .

I am not one to look back but rather, I look forward knowing we all have a tremendous and committed team that will make any path we choose successful. I am truly blessed to have been trusted with this stewardship and I can’t wait to lend my support to our new incoming President Jay Pierce as immediate past president and the fantastic line up that is our 2014 Board.

I too look forward to accepting the honor as the 2014 incoming President for BIA of Southern California.  I promise that I will do my level best to help build upon an already solid foundation and will continue to share my passion with all of our Chapter’s serving to accomplish our goals and meet our challenges in 2014.

This is not a “one person” show, this is a stage bursting with talent and experience.  I am ever so proud to continue my growth in an industry that I have been so fortunate to part of…..God Bless all of my friends and associates of BIA this Holiday Season.  Pat yourselves on the back for a job well done.

Leonard Miller-Richmond American Homes

Leonard Miller has spent the better of his past 10 years with Richmond American Homes. In Riverside County they currently have 14 communities open and have sold nearly 400 single family dwelling units in 2012.   As a company they specialize in single family detached products ranging from the first time home buyer, move up, empty nester to the executive home buyers. Richmond American Homes has been in business for over 40 years and has built over 160,000 homes in 12 states.  Leonard Miller is currently the Regional President for Richmond overseeing California and Nevada.

Under Leonard Miller’s leadership the Company has been a supporter of the Annual Partnership Program, the BIASC PAC Fundraiser and the “Meet the Builder” Event that was cosponsored with the Orange County BIA.   He has also assisted the Chapter Governmental Affairs Team in successfully advocating for fee reductions in several jurisdictions. In fact, one evening he came out to speak before a City Council and he did not have a project in the City.  Richmond American’s commitment to the Building Industry Association is exemplary with members of their Team serving on BIA Chapter Boards at the Los Angeles Ventura, Baldy View and Riverside County Chapters

In 2012 BIA Riverside County honored Leonard Miller as Builder of the Year and was summarily tapped to serve as BIASC President 2012 – 2013.  As BIASC President he was committed to his “Team 1st Approach” in all that he does, he now will serve BIASC as immediate Past President 2013 – 2014.

In addition, Leonard will also serve on the Board for the Riverside County BIA as Secretary Treasurer.

MENTORSHIP / INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Dear BIA Members & Associates,

As many of you know over the course of Dan Boyd’s leadership as President of BIA Riverside County, we began an internship relationship with CalBaptist University.  Internships in today’s job market are more valuable than they have ever been and those students seeking internships tend to be the stand out students of their class.

Recently I met with Francois Jacobs, Associate Professor in the College of Engineering and Director of CBU’s School of Construction Management.  The program we are working on is twofold:

MENTORSHIP

Un-Paid: A component of the CBU curriculum for students at the Sophomore/Junior level will require school of construction management students to seek a mentorship which will generally consist of job site and workplace shadowing as well as ongoing Q & A with the member.  The time factor involved to mentor a student is minimal, roughly 10 hours total over the course of a semester.  CBU is making it a priority to assess the professional maturity level of the individual students in order to insure their program readiness.  Beginning in January there will be 2 – 4 students that will enroll in the course curriculum for Mentorship.

INTERNSHIP

Paid: Internships will require more time and investment on the part of the student as well as the member mentoring the student.  The educational experience expected should be substantive and include the basics of a Mentorship as mentioned above but at a much higher level.  These students will be expected to be intellectually advanced and the internship will be a major last step component as Junior/Senior level students are preparing to enter the workforce upon graduation.  Internships should be a well-rounded educational experience that will of course vary according to where the internship will be.  Internship students will not be available at CBU until the summer.

If you are interested in participating in the MENTORSHIP PROGRAM and/or at a later time offering an INTERNSHIP.  Please respond as soon as possible stating the level of your interest and I will be in touch.  Thank you all for your consideration in enriching the lives of students geared towards an exciting career in our industry.

The Lewis Group of Companies

The Lewis Group of Companies is built on the tradition of quality, integrity and stability that was of paramount importance to Ralph and Goldy Lewis when they founded their home building firm in Claremont in 1955.  Fifty eight years of strict adherence to this philosophy has resulted in the development of more than 56,000 homes, 10,000 apartments and 14 million square feet of retail, office, and industrial space.  Since 1955, the Lewis organization has developed new communities in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah, totaling in excess of 25,000 acres.  In 1999, the Lewis family sold a portion of its business, Lewis Homes, to Kaufman and Broad (KB Home), creating the largest homebuilder in the United States at that time.

The Lewis Group of Companies continues today as one of the nation's largest privately held real estate development companies. The Lewis Group focuses on developing mixed-use planned communities and residential subdivisions in California and Nevada, as well as building and owning rental communities, shopping centers, office parks, and industrial buildings.  Creating unique real estate developments is far more than a business for the Lewis Group of Companies, it is a passion.  Lewis is dedicated to creating communities that address the highest aspirations of the people who live, shop and work within them.

Southern California Edison

Through Southern California Edison's energy efficiency programs, our customers have saved more than four billion kWh - enough energy to power 500,000 homes for a year. No other utility in the nation has matched this accomplishment. Not only does this help us delay building power plants further into the future, but immediate effects include reducing green house gas emissions by more than 2 million tons--the equivalent of removing 250,000 cars from the road. During the next two years, we expect to help customers save an additional two billion kWh, which will eliminate another one million tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

We are concrete contractors based in Riverside, California with operations extending from Riverside County to San Bernardino, Orange, Los Angeles, and San Diego Counties.
