On March 9th, Congressman Ken Calvert (R-CA 42) headlined the BIA’s first Legislative Affairs Committee Luncheon of 2018 which was sponsored by Eastern Municipal Water District (EMWD). Congressman Calvert was introduced to the group by EMWD’s Board Vice-President, Ron Sullivan, who also provided a brief update on the State Water Project, emphasizing the importance of sustainability in our water supply. Mr. Sullivan highlighted the necessity of supporting water infrastructure investments for the state and our region. The subject of tunnels was listed as a top priority for our area. The tunnels discussed are designed to carry water from the Delta Region to Southern California and were described as vital to the sustainability of this region’s agricultural and residential growth.
Congressman Ken Calvert delivered the keynote presentation, highlighting some of the major legislative and regulatory accomplishments beginning to take effect in 2018. Congressman Calvert sits on the Appropriations Committee and shared his perspective on the negotiations that took place leading up to the recent tax reform legislation, as well as ongoing discussions surrounding the proposed budget. Calvert also discussed his role on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and the continuing threat posed by North Korea. Calvert concluded his presentation by providing his view on the overall political landscape going into the 2018 midterm elections and offered his predictions on the outcome of several hotly contested Southern California Congressional races.
Following his address, Calvert fielded questions from an enthusiastic audience. Many attendees had specific questions regarding the new tax reform legislation and how it will impact homeowners in California. There were several questions concerning recently enacted immigration laws and accompanying work visa programs. Other questions dealt with border security, the potential for negotiations with North Korea and the status of the Mueller investigation.
The BIA would like to thank Congressman Calvert for coming to address the luncheon, and to thank Eastern Municipal Water District for sponsoring our event.
Our next Legislative Affairs Committee luncheon will take place June 6th, where we will be hearing from Jeff Kightlinger, the General Manager for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
