The BIA Government Affairs team has been working diligently with local municipalities and government leaders in the Coachella Valley and Imperial County. As a result of this advocacy, the BIA has delivered successes for the industry on several important issues. Two of these successes came in the City of La Quinta and with the Imperial Unified School District.
In 2012, the City of La Quinta approached the BIA with a need to update their user fees. Unlike developer impact fees, user fees are paid to cover the cost of the services rendered by the City. The BIA enjoys a healthy relationship with the City of La Quinta. Because of this relationship, the BIA was asked to contribute to the creation of an updated user fee study. After an in-depth analysis of the final draft study, the BIA supported the adoption and implementation of the new user fees.
As a result of constant correspondence with the BIA, the Imperial Unified School District proposed a draft School Facilities Needs Analysis (SFNA), which recommends an 11% reduction in their level 2 school fees. We commend the Imperial Unified School District for taking time to work with us on this issue and to come to a conclusion that the fees need to be reduced. The Board of Trustees will vote on this issue on March 14, 2013.
The BIA Government Affairs team will continue to interface with decision makers in the Coachella Valley and in Imperial County in an effort to promote positive homeownership polices.
